Steffen Hagen is a lawyer within our IP/TMT practice group. Through Steffen, CMS has an international team member. Having grown up partly in the US (Detroit), he started his career in 2001 at Allen & Overy in Amsterdam and New York – first as a lawyer in intellectual property law (IP), then as a Banking & Finance specialist. Steffen left banking law to once again apply himself to his great passion, when he became an intellectual property lawyer in 2007 at CMS.

Among his clients, Steffen is known as a thorough and passionate specialist in particularly trademark law and copyright law, and as a first-rate trial lawyer. Creativity and acuteness are his trademarks, both in legal proceedings and when preparing (licence) contracts. Due to his excellent drafting skills and broad experience in due diligence, Steffen is frequently brought in to deal with the IP aspects of corporate transactions.

In his customs seizures practice, on behalf of his international clients, Steffen ensures that counterfeit goods cannot enter the country. He also has a specific interest in ambush marketing and (IP-related) sports law. He is active in the CMS sector groups for consumer products, innovation, pharmaceuticals and sport. His clients include multinationals in the field of consumer goods (fast moving consumer goods), a leading power company, national and international sports associations and one of the largest international distributors of mobile phone handsets.

Steffen has had various publications to his name in, among others, the BMM Bulletin (a journal about Benelux and European laws on trademarks and models), Product (a product development magazine) and on the IP Forum (website for intellectual property right). He is also the author of the Dutch legal chapter in "Sports Image Rights in Europe", a publication by the T.M.C. Asser Institute. He is an active member of the BMM (Benelux Association for Laws on Trademarks and Models) and a member of the programme committee responsible for organising the BMM spring and autumn conferences.
