Dian Brouwer graduated in 1993 from the University of Groningen in Criminal Law and Company Law. He then worked for more than six years as a lecturer and researcher at the same university.
After completing his thesis 'Dwangmiddelen in bijzondere wetten' ('Coercive measures in special laws') he joined a niche firm in The Hague as a criminal defence attorney. In 2006 he joined CMS Derks Star Busmann, from 2009 on as Head of the Corporate Criminal Defence team.
Dian has wide-ranging experience, particularly in white-collar crime cases. He has provided legal assistance in major tax fraud cases, in several cases concerning insider dealing and in the Ahold case. He advises on compliance issues, prevention of corruption, the FCPA and the UK Bribery Act. In addition, he specializes in Dutch Supreme Court litigation in criminal cases.
Dian is a member of the Dutch Association of Defence Counsel (NVSA), Chairman of the Association of Supreme Court Advocates in Criminal Cases (VCAS), member of the Advisory Board of the European Criminal Bar Association (ECBA), member of the Criminal Procedure Section of the Advisory Council for Professional Training of the Dutch Bar Association and member of the Advisory Committee on Criminal Law and Procedure of the Dutch Bar Association. In addition, he is course instructor in the courses on Economic Criminal Law at the SSR, the educational institution for members of the judiciary.
